Video Overview:
I had a virtual training earlier this week on one of my favorite topics: health and high performance. I truly believe that health is the foundation on which everything else is based. I don’t truly believe that you can be your happiest if you’re not taking care of your health. I also know that you can’t be your highest-performing if you’re not also taking care of your health.
One of the ways that I asked in the virtual training was:
What is your individual definition of health?
Because the way that I define it is different than the way you define it, AND is different than the way someone else would define it. There’s not a right and a wrong; it is just YOU.
Some of the definitions of health I heard were:
“I want more energy.”
“I want to be more mindful and be more present for people around me.”
“I want to have less joint pain, and aches and pains.”
Again, none of these are right or wrong, but if you want to know one of the secrets behind why Outperformers wake up every single day, a little bit more motivated and a little bit more disciplined towards what it is that they want in life—it’s because they think on a level that is deeper and more underneath what it is that they say they want.
Rest assured, nobody wakes up and says, I think I should be healthier today…just for the sake of being healthier. You don’t want health—you want what health will DO for you.
So in regards to some of these things:
I want more energy. What will that allow you to DO? It’ll allow me to be better at my job, or it’ll allow me to play with my kids and grandkids.
I want to be more present. What will that allow you to DO? It’ll allow me to be a better spouse, better parent, a better boss, a better leader.
I want less aches and pains, and joint pain. What will that allow you to DO? I’ll be able to go up and down the stairs without hurting. I’ll be able to go and play tennis. I’ll be able to go hiking, running bootcamp, etc.
There is always something underneath what it is that you say you want, and when you can identify this, now you’ll wake up in the morning and instead of saying, “well, I know I need to be healthier today,” you’ll think, I want to be able to play with my kids or grandkids, so I need to exercise and take care of my nutrition, stress and sleep.
This is an Outperformers psychology.
Outperformers think, I want to be a better spouse, partner, parent, boss or leader, so I let that drive by exercise my nutrition, my sleep and stress.
Outperformers think, I want to be able to play tennis, do bootcamp or go hiking and running, so I let that drive the things that will allow me to have less joint pain and less aches and pains.
When you think on this level and reinforce this into your psychology, I promise it will translate into more decisive action and better behaviors towards what it is that you say you want.
And you can use it in any area of your life. It’s never about what it is that we say we want; it’s always about something that is underneath it. Whether we’re talking about health, happiness, or high performance, I promise that it will have a massive impact on what you do every single day.
