There's a lot of bad advice on social media. How to be mentally tough, get motivated, remain resilient, etc.
The algorithms must know I read this stuff because I get fed plenty of it!
In particular, the below quote triggered me this week:

This is an exact quote I would have written 15-ish years ago. I still agree with many parts of it today.
You do have to work when you don't feel like it. That builds discipline.
You should want to improve because you owe it to yourself. You deserve it.
You do have to earn it. It's not going to be handed to you.
Where I have a problem with messages like this is that it does nothing to BRIDGE THE GAP of success and fulfillment.
Follow the quoted advice and I believe there are only two potential outcomes:
1. You burn out along the way. Too lonely, too demanding.
2. You become wildly successful but because no one helped you, you do little to help anyone else. Why would you? No one cared about you, why should you care about them?
Unfortunately, the better, well-rounded-human third option is not on the table:
3. You become wildly successful, fulfilled, appreciative and empathetic to others.
I could write a book on this topic (maybe I will!) and you may think I'm reading way too much into one quote. That's fine.
But these are the messages that are being fed to us, our kids, our employees, etc.
The opposite isn't better and I see that too.
That you SHOULD have things handed to you because that's your right. No, it's your responsibility.
That if you're a little tired, you SHOULD slack off or take the day off. No, sometimes you gotta push through.
The balance is hard. It's partially what I was saying in my "Be Kind To Yourself" post a while back.
To sign off, I'm going to take a shot at rewriting the quote. How Scott sees it, older at age 45 and hopefully a little wiser

"You're tired? So is everyone, you'll get through it. Life's unfair? Yeah, it can be at times. The truth is, excuses won't get you anywhere. Honesty and results will. But the additional truth is, people care about you. Stop being resentful and fighting the battle alone. Ask for help, ask for guidance. Don't ask for sympathy. This is freeing AND fulfilling. Self-respect comes from working when you don't feel like it, pushing when no one claps and improving because you owe it to yourself. The world is going to keep moving either way, don't you want to crush it during your time here, then celebrate with those that lended a helping hand for your better life? You get to choose. But you've got to earn it. So shut the noise, show up, and go harder...and smarter."

How'd I do?
Keep Outperforming,

Outperform.
