One Simple Mistake to Avoid in 2019

Hello Outperformer,

It has been a busy week for me. I’m speaking five times (MTWF and today), most of it revolving around goal setting, habit formation and Outperforming in 2019.

For this week, I’ve let my audiences know early on that I’m not there to motivate them to do goal setting – we are actually going to do goal setting!

I can tell this is an uncomfortable process for some and, as we work through it, I always ask if there’s anyone who would like to share their goals so we can tweak, refine and make them more “sticky.” It also helps the group to learn from others.

One thing I’ve noticed is that, inevitably, someone will volunteer to share their goals, but then sheepishly look down and say something like, “Well, I kinda did my goal setting wrong…”

I always respond the same way:

“You CANNOT do it WRONG.”

Is there a more efficient and effective way to do it? Perhaps. But just the fact that you’re taking a moment to think about what you genuinely want to make happen in 2019 AND you’re putting pen to paper already puts you ahead of 90% of people in your achievement and fulfillment this year.

If you’re reading this and you’ve been thinking about your goals but haven’t yet inked them, I can’t fault you. I’m somewhat embarrassed to say that for the first 25+ years of my life I never wrote any of my goals down. I had them in my head and I thought that was good enough.

It’s not. And if you believe it is then you’re defying a mountain of research that proves otherwise, such as this study that shows you’re 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down.

I believe one of the reasons we don’t write our goals down is because doing so would make them tangible. Concrete. You’re now accountable and committed to something that’s out of your head.

But the time is going to go by either way, for all of us. A year can go by in the blink of an eye. Why not spend some time consciously designing what you want and how you’re going to get there?
